Prophecy And Idolatry To Cease

Zechariah 13:2-9

“And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.  And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.” (Zechariah 13:2-3)

For fifteen hundred years, Israel had vacillated between serving God and worshipping various idols and false gods, despite their covenant with God to serve only God.  God had given them instructions for identifying false prophets but time after time they allowed someone who claimed to have special insight into what God wanted or what was right to lead them into sin against God, because they ignored these instructions.

In Deuteronomy 13:1-3, God commanded, “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”  If a prophet came speaking in the name of another god, it didn’t matter whether the prophecy came to pass or not, they were to kill him and ignore his prophecy.  God was just allowing them to decide if they were really committed to God or not.

Unfortunately, some false prophets pretend to be from God, and Deuteronomy 18:20-22 tells how to test their message.  “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.  And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

When a prophet came claiming to have a message from God, thare was to be a short term prophecy they could check.  If that short term prophecy didn’t happen, they were to kill the prophet because he had lied about God, claiming he had said something he didn’t say.  He had gone beyond his authority.  A prophet is a person who tells what God has said.  When Christ is king, there will be no need for prophets because everyone can communicate directly with Christ.  I Corinthians 13:8 declares, “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.”

When Christ sets up his earthly kingdom, the Jews will finally realize God no longer needs prophets to give parts of the message, because it is complete.  They will no longer follow those who purport to be prophets or have all the answers.

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.  And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.  And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.” (Zechariah 13:6-9)

People will no longer proclaim themselves prophets, nor will they call attention to themselves by the way they dress.  Instead they will conceal their past claims focusing on a common trade.   When questioned about scars from their punishment for false prophecy, they will claim they were just accidents.

God will bring Judgment on the pastors and leaders who have encouraged his people to follow those false prophets, causing them to be scattered.  He will then judge those who have not gone completely away.  Two thirds of them will be destroyed because of their lack of commitment to God, separating out and firming the commitment of the other third to God.  Numerous other passages refer to this same period of God’s judgment of Israel.

Mark 13:13-20 describes the time.  “And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.  But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house: And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.

But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!  And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.  For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.  And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.”

Revelation 12:13-17 gives another picture of Satan’s attack on Israel.  Israel is portrayed as the woman who bore Christ.  “And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.  And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.  And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.  And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

When Satan is unable to destroy Israel, he will turn his attention to the Christians.  Revelation 13:4-8 describes his attack on them.  “And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?  And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.  And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Revelation 7:13-17 describes those who survive the attacks of Satan.  “And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?  And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.  For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”
