Saving Faith Produces Action

Several years ago, an evangelist flew into Albuquerque to hold a revival in one of the churches.  The pastor was a few minutes late arriving at the airport to pick him up, and on the way to the church he told the pastor, he was glad for the delay because it had given him the opportunity to win three people to Christ.  The pastor waqs amazed that anyone could win that many souls in such a short time and decided to go soul winning with him the next morning to learn how.  As they went down the street, the evangelist asked each person they met if they believed in Jesus.  If they said they did, he announced that they were saved.   When the pastor asked how he could say that, the evangelist quoted John3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Unfortunately, a lot of people have made the same mistake the Evangelist was making.   James 2:19 tells us, “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”  It is great to believe that Jesus exists and that he died on the cross, but even the devils believe that, and they clearly are not saved.  Simply believing in his existence, or even that he died for our sins is not enough to save us.  Romans 10:9-13 tells us, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

In order to be saved, it necessary to believe not only that Jesus exists but that he was raised from the dead.  Implicit in that belief is the understanding that, as Romans 3:23 states,”… all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,” and that “…the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.according to Romans 6:23.  Believing that jesus was raised from the dead is critical because as Acts 17:31 tells us, “…he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”  As I Corinthians 15:17 warns, “…if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”    This is not merely mental acceptance of the statement, but a conviction that he died and was raised again for your sins, according to Romans 10:10a.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness…”

To receive that salvation, one must act on that belief in the resurrection, confessing that belief to God.  James 2:17 warns that faith must produce action to accomplish anything.  “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. “  Romans 10:10b states “…with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. “  Inherent in that confession is the acknowledgment that we are sinners who deserve death, but that Jesus has taken our place, paying our penalty for us.   I John 1:8-10 tells us, “f we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.   If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

There is no indication whether any of the people who the evangelist talked to were saved or not, because we have no idea whether they believed in Christ’s resurrection, or whether they had confessed that belief to God.  They may just believe that there was a historical person called Jesus who taught the people.

  1. Hi Donald, you have quoted, “Romans 3:23 states,”… all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,” and that “…the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

And then you said, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. “ Romans 10:10b states “…with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Can you see that Romans 10:10 is in opposition to Romans 3:23 ?

A free gift is without works, otherwise it’s not a free gift.
If you have to do something for that salvation, then it is not a free gift but works.

  2. If one doesn't believe the gift will be given and refuses to accept it, he will not get it even though he could have had it just by accepting it. If one is to receive the gift, he must actively accept it. God will not force it on him.

  3. You see, if you need to do something in order to receive a gift, then that is considered works.
And a free gift is without works.
A free gift is that which is in your possession and not that which is in the giver’s possession.
If it is in the giver’s possession, it might not be for you.
And again, if you have to take it, then it's not a free gift.

  4. Is what you are saying is that if a person offers you a hundred dollars, it isn't a fee gift unless he brings it to your house and places it in your hand? If you refuse to accept it as a gift, then according to the scriptures you cannot have salvation.

  5. Yes, but the free gift is not an offering.
The free gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In other words, the free gift is LIFE from the dead. Remember, we were born spiritually dead and therefore we needed to be born again (John 3:3), and it is that new birth of spiritual LIFE which is the free gift of God, not by your will or the will of a man but by the will of God, and therefore boasting is excluded.

Can you see, that LIFE is not offered and you cannot accept it or reject it either.

It is the same as your first birth in the flesh, you were born by the will of your natural father and you could not have willed to accept it or refused that gift of life in the flesh, it had nothing to do with your will.

Once you were NOT, and then you were born by the will of your natural father. The same is in the Spirit, the new birth, “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8).

  6. If someone offered you a million dollars, would you refuse to take it because it was in paper bag instead of a plastic one? It really doesn't matter whether salvation fits your definition of free or not, if you don't accept it, it isn't yours.

  7. Salvation from a spiritually dead state unto spiritual life (Being born of the Spirit) is not an offering, but a gift.
Whether we call it a FREE gift or just a gift makes no difference.
In that salvation man’s will is excluded and he has NO choice to accept nor to reject it.

    1. That is the standard Hyper-Calvinist position, If it is correct, then John 3:15-21, and a great many other scriptures can not be true. Do you believe God's word or your own ideas? there is no point in continuing the discussion if you reject the scriptures.

  8. Hi Donald, I have been away from the computer for a few days :-)

As to your comment, whether that is the Hyper Calvinists position or not, I do not know. But I know that is what the Bible teaches and it is sensible and logically sound.

I am not a Calvinist, although some of my brothers in Christ call me a Calvinist, but that is because I fully understand the doctrine of election and therefore they give me the nickname “Calvinist”.

As to (John 3:15-21), that salvation is not a free gift. That salvation is by works and it requires from us to believe and to do whatever is required from us in order to be saved.
If we do not believe, and do contrary to the Lord’s command, we will perish. Therefore we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ or else we perish, that is the Gospel.

So then, the free gift salvation is only for the elect (God’s children), and the universal salvation is for everyone who is willing to believe, (v. 18) so that the world might be saved through Him (Jesus).

That was my point on my first comment, “Can you see that Romans 10:10 is in opposition to Romans 3:23 ?”
One a free gift, the other by works :-)

  9. I'm not following your logic. I Peter tells us we are elect according to the foreknowledge of God. God already knows what our choice will be because he is omnipotent, and choose us accordingly, yet he still gives us that choice. Salvation is offered to everyone, whether they believe or not. It costs those who accept it nothing, nor are those who reject it charged. As used here, the word free means without cost or payment. Thus salvation is free to all men, just as Romans 5:18 says.

  10. Yes, God elected us by His choice and not by our choice. For we were all haters of God and lovers of self, and there is not one who seeketh after God no not even one (Rom. 3:9-20).

We who are born again were in Christ (our Father) before He created the world and therefore He knew those who were His children. And in Adam we all have died and were born spiritually dead, and for that reason the Lord has given us (His children, the elect) the gift of life (spiritual life) as a free gift and therefore boasting is excluded.

You said, “ God already knows what our choice will be because he is omnipotent, and choose us accordingly, yet he still gives us that choice.”

Yes, the Lord has given us a choice, but not in the above matter. The choice we now have is to do the will of our Father who is in heaven, and only if we do His will, we will be saved from our sins (Mat. 1:21).
And for everyone else in the whole world who chooses to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will also be saved.

It is not so that we have chosen Him, but rather that He has chosen us (John 15:16), and it is because of Him that we are in Christ (1 Cor. 1:30).

  11. Based on your statement then much of the scripture is pointless because only certain people have the opportunity to be saved. We can argue the issue forever, but it is pointless. Titus 3:10-11 instructs, "A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself." The word heretic literally refers to one who stirs up controversy or argument. It would be a waste of time and disobedience to God to continue the discussion.
