Acts 19:1-7
One of the places Apollos went was to Corinth. While Paul’s ministry in Corinth had been primarily to Gentiles, Apollos’ was mostly to Jews. Human nature being what it is, the people in Corinth began comparing the two men, as a way of feeding their pride, which resulted in conflict. They began to base their measures of spirituality on who had taught them, and as I Corinthians 3:1-4 stresses, the very fact of conflict demonstrated a total lack of spirituality, that prevented growth in other areas.
“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?” (I Corinthians 3:1-4)
The conflicts in churches today still proves the lack of spirituality in modern churches. The problem was not Paul or Apollos, but the people who chose to focus on them rather than on Christ.
"And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.” (Acts 19:1-2)
The church at Ephesus had apparently been started by Christians fleeing persecution in Jerusalem. After his trip to Jerusalem, and visiting the churches he and Silas had started or worked in in Antioch and the surrounding areas. Paul returned to Ephesus where he had left Aquila and Priscilla. When he came to the church, he found a group of church members that troubled him, although no one else seems to have noticed anything. While they were doing the same things as everyone else in the church, he saw no evidence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had said, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them,” in Matthew 7:20. Works or actions are not the same as fruit, contrary to what many believe. Fruit is produced because of the nature of the being. It can only be produced by that particular type of being, while works may be produced by similar living beings. For example, while all trees break down carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon to grow and produce wood, roots and leaves, their works, only an apple tree produces apples, their fruit.
Because he saw no fruit, Paul asked these church members whether they had received the Holy Spirit. After all, as Romans 8:9 states, “…Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Their answer was that they didn’t even know there was such a thing. Obviously there was a problem.
“And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.” (Acts 19:3)
Many in the modern church are in much the same position, with no concept of the Holy Spirit in their lives, although some will point to some emotional feeling such as the Mormons refer to as a burning in their bosom as proof. Paul immediately asked why they’d been baptized or joined the church. It’s a question that a lot of church members need consider. They had been baptized because John taught that they should be baptized if they were sorry for their sin.
“Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” (Acts 19:4)
John had made one other command, which many overlooked, that people should be baptized as a sign of repentance for their sin, but that they should believe on Jesus when he came. In doing so he established a precedent of baptism as an evidence of obedience to what was being taught, just as circumcision was a sign of practicing the Jewish religion. This group, though they were in the church knew only of repentance.
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 19:5)
Like many today, this group believed that baptism saved them. When they understood that it was by faith in Christ, they accepted him and were re-baptized to show their new belief. As members of the church they had been hearing the teaching regularly, but never realized their own lack.
“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.” (Acts 19:6-7)
Before the men had demonstrated no spiritual fruit. When they accepted Christ they received the Holy Spirit, and at Paul’s touch, the Holy Spirit demonstrated his presence in their lives by enabling them to speak in tongues and prophesy. Clearly, it was the belief in Christ, and not the baptism that caused them to receive the Holy Spirit.
Because the modern church so often fails to distinguish between good works and spiritual fruit, there are thousands of unsaved people just like these twelve in modern churches, who believe they are Christians, and nobody ever notices.

Firstly, I loved the comment you left on my blog about Pastors, attacking Hell, with squirt guns! HA HA HA!!
ReplyDeleteAlso I love your explaination about the difference between works and fruit.
There are those Rock bands that hold concerts for charity. They did all that and it was a good work, but they didn't produce any fruit.
Only people that have the Holy Spirit can bare spiritual fruit, and without Jesus even we can do nothing except we abide in Him.
I'm telling ya, people don't have a clue, when they are not saved. The things I'm learning now, sometimes makes my hair stand up. Like that King in the Old Testament, when they brought him an old Bible that they found and when he read it, He realised that they were doing SO many things wrong that he knew they just had to be in trouble with God. And he was right!
It's often difficult to tell the difference between wheat and tares. Of course the Lord has no problem knowing the true from the false and will someday separate the two. Even so come Lord Jesus!
ReplyDeleteAmen to this post, Donald. I was just writing about something quiet similar, and contemplating the number of the unsaved in our church, who think that something apart from faith in Christ will bring them to Heaven.
ReplyDeleteThe debate between Paul and Apollos is interesting. Here we have denominations rearing their head in a primal form. Wesleyan, Lutheran, Calvinist, etc churches ought to learn this lesson: Christ is our Lord and Savior and denominations seem to have done great damage to the body of Christ causing extensive schisms. Sure there has been some good from them; but by and large I have become convinced that they are largely the result of pride and carnality.
Again, wonderful post! God bless.
Hello everyone.
ReplyDeleteFaith comes by hearing, and hearing by preaching.
Of course, we can be faithful to anything, we can seek out those people who will tell us what our itching ears wish to hear, and to be honest, I for one feel that most people do just that.
In other words, I suppose I am saying that it appears there are very few Bereans around, who hold God's Own Word, Scripture, The Bible, in great esteem, seeking to know what is said in Scripture, prefering to be told by others, what is said, and what is meant, and choosing to test very little - blind faith - faith, devoide of knowledge and understanding, faith - in something, or someone, other than God, His scripture, Truth.
How many understand that Jesus gave His Life, to enable us to be baptized?
If we understand that, why do so many refuse to be baptized?
How many understand that when we are baptized with The Holy Spirit, attested to by the God given gift of tongues for all of those baptized, we have received within ourselves, The very same Holy Spirit, that met with mankind above The Ark of the Covenant, in the Holy of Holies - yes - WOW! But how many understand that?
How many understand that baptism with The Holy Spirit, is the 'Wedding Garment.'?
When we are baptized with The Holy Spirit, we receive within ourselves The very Power of God's Kingdom, His Own Holy Spirit, recognized, and obeyed by Demons, yet not by very many who claim to be 'christians.'
Jesus has told us we must be baptized in water (NOT CHRISTENING) as we appeal to God for His Grace, His forgiveness; and we must be baptized with His Holy Spirit, to be born again as a new creation - receiving anew the intimate relationship with God that we lost through Adam's fall.
Jesus, The Firstborn of many, when He was baptized with The Holy Spirit, His baptism, and The coming of The Holy Spirit to dwell within Him, without measure, revealing Him to be The Anointed One - or in Greek - The CHRIST - meaning Anointed.
We are the many if we too will seek to be baptized, seeking God for the Gift He has made of The Holy Spirit, His Gift to give, attested to with tongues, that we may know the event has taken place.
LUKE 12 v 50.
"I have a baptism to be baptized with...." a baptism for us to be baptized with.
"At that time (their/our baptism), you will know that I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I in you." JOHN 14 v 15 to 20. From which we get the phrase from Paul of - "In Christ Jesus," "In Christ," or "Christ in us."
"If a a man is in Christ, he is a new creation."
Baptism, water, and Spirit; a test of our pride, love, and sincerity; and the narrow gate by which we enter God's Kingdom, His Rule and Authority here on Earth, as recognized by the Demons, and the whole of Creation.
"Jesus we know, Paul we know, but who are you?"
David, I'm not sure I understand your comment. It seems as if you are accusing me of doing exactly what you seem to be doing. If so, I'll have to ask the same question for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteI was accusing you of nothing, I was pleased to read your blog, as very few who claim to be 'Christian,' have any understanding of the claim they are making; 'Christian' simply means an 'anointed one' - and that Anointing is The Baptism with The Holy Spirit.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone claims to be a 'Christian,' they are simply claiming to be 'anointed,' or in other words, baptized with The Promise of The Father, which is - The Holy Spirit dwelling within us, to lead us, and guide us in God's Word, and to empower us as witnesses and servents, children of God.
Jesus gave His Life to enable our baptism, in water, and in Spirit; but few understand baptism, for it has been corrupted, and rejected, by most.
I was so very pleased to read your blog.
David,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. A couple of the comments have come through that were clearly just attacks, and I guess I got a little defensive. Thanks for clarifying it. I am sometimes amazed at how many think just praying "the sinner's prayer" makes one a Christian with no understanding of the spiritual change that the Holy Spirit produces.
The gross misuse of JOHN 3 v 16, has done great harm; if only people would read JOHN 3 v 1 - 21, they may learn more about the witness of Jesus, and exactly what it is He needs us to believe and obey - "you must be born again."
ReplyDelete"unless a man is born of the water and The Spirit, he can never enter The Kingdom of God" - the narrow gate - baptism, and enduring love.
I believe that 'entering The Kingdom' here, is not talking about Heaven, but rather The Wisdom/understanding, Power and Authority that we receive as God's children, when The Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us.
I.e - "Jesus we know, Paul we know (both baptized), but who are you?"
"It is not I Who do the works, but The Father Who dwells within Me."
"Why do you call Me good? There is only One Who is good, The Father God in Heaven."
The Kingdom of God - His place of Rule, and Authority - His Word, His Holy Spirit, His Will.
They will heal the sick, cast out demons, speak in new tongues, handle serpents (false teachers/prophets) and if they drink poison (false doctrine)it shall not hurt them (for The Holy Spirit will reveal the error to them, using Scripture).
You brood of vipers - the poison of asps is upon their lips.
